Discovering Mum & Dad

2006 is the time for my parents to have good health and happiness, for me to finish my studies, for my friends to have happiness.

I have been spending a considerable quality time with my parents for the past few weeks. Dad has to be on medication and observe the growth in his body. Everything is alright so far he is really optimistic and always teases us. Picked up the interest of collecting natural stones recently, he has been doing some of his shopping while driving passengers around.

As for my mum, have been watching the famous korean drama Dae Jang Geum with her. We have enjoyed it. It was an attempt for me to remind her that this is the era where Woman can do whatever Man does and vice versa.

Some discovery about my mum:

1) She has to brush up her Human resource management skill. This is because she keeps asking her 2 daughters one 24 and the other 13 to go to the supermarket to carry 20 Kg of rice and etc.

I was asking her why she doesn’t ask her son along who is 23 and a fit taekwondo instructor to help do this bi weekly task since he has nothing better to do during Sunday afternoons except playing computer games, should make full use of him wisely.

She replied: he is a boy, not too nice to go supermarket lah.

OMG!!

2) She needs to learn not to dress up too much. Not her fault, partly my fault too.

Mum: Yuan, when are you free? Can you bring me to shop around Bugis and Plaza Singapura which I have never been to before?

Me: (feeling awkward if her courtesy) When would you like to do that.

Mum: How about this weekend, are you free?

Me: okay

That day, mum woke up early, finish all her laundry, dress up nicely put on make up ( YES make up) as if she is going to a grand dinner. She was so excited that day. In her world, going to Bugis is like going traveling, must look nice etc. This is because she is a perfect housewife that seldom wanders around without my dad and me bringing her. The furthest she went shopping was Westmall next to my house.

I really wonder why the make up etc until my cousin told me that I should bring her out more often so that going to anywhere is not a big deal to her anymore. Her words made me felt guilty. The number of times I bring my mum around can be counted within my 4 fingers. Ouch…..

3) Mum needs to learn to communicate properly.

Me: Mum, what time would you like to have lunch today.
Mum: I have cooked porridge today.

Me: Mum, what time will sis be back?
Mum: She has dance today.
Me: Yeah I know, so what time will she be back?
Mum: How should I know how late it will be?

Dad: What time did you see that man this morning so that I can check the video.
Mum: 8.35am.
Dad: I can’t find it from 8.35am to 9am.
Mum: What about 10 plus am? I don’t know as I was reading the newspaper, not looking at the time.
Me: Then just say that you don’t know, Mum.

4) Mum needs to appreciate that those cheap things are not fake. Not that they are fake, it is just that the word fake always slips off my mum’s tongue haha.

Dad: Hey look, durians on sales, 3 boxes for $10 at NTUC.
Mum: Jia de (it’s fake).
Me and Sis: Ya right mum are they made of plastic?

Sis starts teasing mum with fake:

Mum: look at the chicken essence on sales.
Sis: Jia de
Mum: (giggles)

That's my mum, isn't she cute?

Yeah, it's sometimes easy to laugh at it(I included) Just keep in mind that one day you'll soon be a mom, who'd want to catch up with the fast changing world... once you teach them I guess they'll truly be thankful for it. Now my mom is very much into SMS/instant messaging even when I am abroad. So guess it helps. :)

To Ying: Yes forming a club full of cute mums could be a phenomenon in town hehe. That includes you and me?

To Liv & Triin: Way to go to introduce new technology to my mum. She does not even owe a handphone. She is afraid of complicated things. But I would definitely have to find ways to help my mum in overcoming them for within the next 8mths before I fly off for a traineeship.

Hey girl,

Glad to hear you have a lovely time with your mum.
I guess if you start the club, Thailand will follow then for sure. I'm in!!

Sound like yr mum and mine are much alike in the way of avoiding the complicated thing. Still, take this as lesson from the one who forgot to teach your parent how to use computer, your telephone bill will be extremely high!! I am living in that consequence!!

As u wish to save money while u r abroad, there still be "Y not calling?" (eventhough u just called 2 days ago) every 5 mins. later on the same telephone conversation "Seem so busy and forget about home?" (again u just called 2 days ago) You might try to tell and repeat again that you just called, it's no used though. Just admit that and there's gone your phone card.
So make sure you prepare for that. It should be in the SN preparation before taking traineeship though haha.

Miss you loaded.

To Weaw: Thank goodness I still have a younger brother and sister to skpye together with my parents when I am overseas for ITEP...should be able to help in saving...provided I have easy internet access during traineeship haha.

Then if I call, mum will say, it is too expensive, don't need to call so often hahahaha.

Hugs
Cheryl
